I have finished school. Where to?
You have graduated from university and you feel that all the opportunities are ahead of you. You are young, you feel you have the power to work, you have a diploma, and you are opened to new things. Yeah, if everything was so easy…
If you have worked during university, you can relax, especially if the jobs you had were connected with what you studied during university. You have what to write in your resume and you already are used to the responsibilities of a work place. But if you went to a school that required all your time or if you wanted to skip from the responsibilities and to be supported only by your family, than you may feel a little in air. You won’t stay in the hostel with the dollars you receive from your parents and, even if your parents are willing to help you for a little period, you will feel pressure not to live on their behalf and to earn your own living. The first step you can do is to look at the sites specialized in looking for jobs, or even at the announcements from the newspaper. Don’t feel discouraged about the fact that your resume is rather short, there are firms that look for people without experience for the wish to form them or (more likely), because the wage aspirations are a lot smaller. Besides, firms which hire persons who have recently graduated get subventions from the state, and the employer has to keep the work rapport for at least 3 years. So, there is no reason for you to feel “handicapped”. Join as many sites like this, because you never know how a possibility appears. Job fairs are excellent opportunities too: statistics show that a great percentage of those who go to them find satisfying jobs. The reason: you have a direct contact with the employers or with their representatives and a good first impression can make them overlook some lacks from your resume. Your aspirations have to be in accordance with your training level and your experience. Don’t get your hopes high thinking that you will find yourself an executive manager of some company overnight, but be realist and be prepared to start from a smaller position. Don’t go for jobs like: “Extraordinary business, work at home and set your own wage according to the amount of work. Competitive environment and perspectives of getting advanced quickly”. Behind these announcements there are a lot of scams and it always gets to something like: “To do all this you just have to buy for half its price a certain book or a set of products”. There aren’t any hens with gold eggs, don’t be naïve. If you get to an interview, don’t be intimidated by your lack of experience. The employer has already read your resume, he knows your age, so he hasn’t high expectations from you. Stress your personal qualities and the advantages that the age gives you: the strength to work, flexibility, and the desire to evolve professionally. Maybe you will not be the one that gets the job, but if you have left a good impression they will keep you in their data basis, or, if it is possible, they will offer you another job in that firm. Don’t base on a single interview. Send resumes daily everywhere you should and think about the possibility of some extra courses. You have plenty of time, you can’t complain. Don’t base only on people you know and who can recommend you, because a lot of promises don’t materialize. The first condition is self esteem. Youth gives you some advantages and it is good to exploit them. Seriousness, enthusiasm, and a pleasant personality can compensate the lack of experience. Good luck!
